Log triage: trim and redact first, then ask what's unusual

By Michael Shreeves · 12 August 2026 · IT & Systems · 2 min read

Logs suit an AI tool well, because spotting patterns in noisy text is what it's good at. They're also full of usernames, IP addresses and hostnames, and now and then a token somebody shouldn't have logged.

So before you paste anything:

  1. Cut it down to a few minutes either side of the problem, from the one source that matters.
  2. Redact it yourself, with a script or find and replace, not by asking the AI. A few regular expressions catch IP addresses, email addresses and the hostnames you know about, and they use the same placeholder every time, so [HOST 1] is always the same host. The redaction tip covers why the tool shouldn't see the originals.
  3. Group it yourself if it's big. A command that counts repeated lines (PowerShell's Group-Object, or sort | uniq -c) gives exact counts, which a model can get wrong. Paste the summary along with a sample.

Then ask:

Below is a redacted log extract from [SYSTEM] covering [TIME WINDOW].
The problem: [SYMPTOM, AND WHEN IT STARTED].
1. Group repeated messages. Treat any counts I haven't supplied as
   approximate and say so.
2. List anything that first appears near [TIME] or changes in how often
   it happens.
3. Give the three likeliest explanations, each with the exact log lines
   that support it.
4. For each, one check or command that would confirm or rule it out.
Say clearly where you're guessing. Don't tell me to restart anything
until you've listed what else to look at first.

Log: [PASTE]

You're after leads. A confident wrong diagnosis is the main risk, and asking for the supporting lines and a way to confirm each one keeps the decision with you.

It only sees the window you gave it. If a change went out last Tuesday, tell it. And anything security related, sign-ins or privilege changes, belongs in a tool your organisation has approved for that, with a person making the call. An AI summary isn't an incident assessment.
