Asking an AI for a PDF, and what to do if it can't make one

By Michael Shreeves · 12 July 2026 · AI & Copilot · 2 min read

"Make this into a PDF" goes one of two ways. A file turns up, or you get the same text back with a polite note saying it can't create files.

Which one you get depends on the tool and the mode you're in, not on how well you asked. Claude with file creation on, or ChatGPT with its data tools, can hand you a real PDF. A plain chat window can't. This changes a lot, so try it with something throwaway first.

Put the fallback in the prompt and it works wherever you are:

Produce this as a one-page PDF I can download: [CONTENT OR TASK].
Layout: A4, title at the top, a short summary box, then the detail as a
table. (Change this to suit your content. If it isn't tabular, say what
you want instead.) Plain fonts, nothing fancy.
If you can't create a file in this chat, give me clean, self-contained
HTML instead, with print styles for A4, so I can open it in a browser
and use Print > Save as PDF.

Naming the layout beats leaving it to the model's idea of what a PDF looks like. The HTML fallback takes thirty seconds to print, which is quicker than a second round of "can you try again", and every re-ask is another chance for it to reword your content without telling you.

Open the file and read it before it goes anywhere. Tables and page breaks are where generated PDFs go wrong, and check the numbers still match what you gave it.
